CHAPTER 21
“What the hell, Chandler?” Kat yelled, landing a few good kicks on his shins while she struggled for release. Stephen turned and headed toward the living room, Alex following behind him, because God knew, it would take them both to keep Kat from the kitchen.
“You don’t need to see that, sweetheart,” Stephen said calmly, plopping Kat down on the couch. She immediately bounced back up. Placing his hands on her shoulders, Stephen tried to soothe her, bending down until their faces were close together, moving one hand to hold her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes. “You don’t, Kat.”
She stared at him for a long moment before blowing out a breath, sinking back down on the couch. Stephen crouched in front of her, ready to catch her, not entirely trusting that she wouldn’t attempt to get past him. But she surprised him, resting her forehead on his for a moment. “You’re right,” she said simply.
Eventually, Stephen stood, realizing he’d never been in Kat’s living room before. Hardwood floors gleamed, looking brand new. A large red and gold area rug was centered amid the furniture. The wall immediately in front of him held a large fireplace, the surrounding stone rising nearly fifteen feet to the ceiling, flanked on either side by French doors with arched windows overhead that looked out toward the backyard. The walls looked as if they’d been professionally done, shimmering a soft gold in the light coming in from doors. To his left were three symmetrically spaced arched windows, the love seat in front of them. Above them, in the center of the room, hung a large crystal chandelier, sparkling in the dim light, reflecting light on the walls. It was truly beautiful.
The wall on the right, where he’d expect to see a television was instead a large grouping of photos. Looking closer, Stephen realized they were of the house he was currently in. The photos were before, during, and after the complete renovation of the entire house, both inside and out. He remembered thinking the first time he was here that the house had looked like it had been made for her, so he asked, “Did you do the renovations?”
“What?” Kat looked up at him, confusion on her face.
Stephen nodded toward the photos, “The house looks made for you.” Feminine, elegant, and beautiful.
“Xavier is asking for you, Stephen,” Alex said, coming into the living room.
Kat visibly stiffened for a moment. “You two look like you could be twins,” Kat said, her eyes bouncing between them.
“We get that a lot.”
